Hi,
I have a stupid question. Does the two clustering server need to be exact
same machine? Is there any preference?

Simple answer - YES! Best Practice answer - YES! Real World, NO.

See
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/catalog/server/default.aspx?xslt=categoryproduct&subid=22&pgn=8b712458-b91c-4a7d-8695-23e9cd3ae95b
for hardware that is tested for compatibility.

If you have different servers, updates and performance might differ, which
could be fatal for a cluster.

As for preferences, I like HP :) (Disclaimer, I don't work for HP or Compaq
and never have). Second place is Dell, third is everyone else.

Cheers,

Rod

To add to Rod's answer, you can configure a cluster with different hardware
and it might "work" but it will likely not be supported. Here's an article
which describes just how much memory and processor differences your cluster
nodes can have and still maintain MS support:
