Hello,

I have a small client/server LAN running Windows 2003 Active Directory at
home. The LAN consists of a Domain Controller/DNS Server, a DHCP server, and
a Windows XP machine. All the servers have a static ip of 192.168.x.x
I am thinking about getting broadband cable connection. I will also be
buying a cable modem router. The setup will be that my internal LAN will
connect to the hub, then the hub to the router which then connects to the
cable modem out to the internet. Based on the this setup, how do I share my
cable connection without having to use Microsoft ICS? I think I have to
configure the router but not quite sure how to begin.

if you have a router, you don't need RRAS. However, if you want to have more
security by adding RRAS server, you can enable NAT.

Several ways to do this, however the most simple way is to configure the
ROUTER -=BEFORE= connecting the rest of the network. Depending on the brand
the router IP address is preset at the factory - check the manual for
instructions on how to connect to it. If you are going to use the DHCP on
your server, then you will need to disable the DHCP on the router. Plug a
system into the LAN port or one of the Switch ports on router and do a
ipconfig /release - ipconfig /renew and get a DHCP address from the router to
allow you to log in. Follow the directions and make the necessary changes
for DHCP as stated above. If you are getting CABLE service then the WAN
address will no doubt be assigned by DHCP from the provider. If DSL then you
will have to fill in the provided info for IPSEC normally, but not always.

Second thing to be sure of is to be sure the default router address does NOT
conflict with any of your internal static addresses. By default the router
(depends on whose it is) will be set to one of the following: 192.168.1.1,
192.168.0.1 If these are ok then that will suffice.

Since you are using the server as a DNS server, you will want to put a
forwarder into the DHCP server configuration to point to your ROUTER.
Instead of the ISP provided DNS addresses. Most of this info should be in
the router manual, and I know I have not covered everything in a lot of
detail, but this will get you up and running on broadband.
