Re: 3270 Setup |

Ralph,
If Extra is configured to talk to an IP address then it's using TN3270 rather
than SNA. In that case you don't need a HIS server, as HIS server for 3270 is
there to provide SNA (or IP-DLC) connections to the mainframe. I'm sure your
mainframe does support SNA/Enterprise Extender as well, so you could use a HIS
server, but you're only adding a point of failure, so sticking with a TN3270
client is probably best.
Not sure what the licensing deal with HIS is if all you want to use is the
TN3270 client - which is part of HIS client.
For DB2 Connect replacement you want the HIS DB2 OLEDB driver - this can run
over SNA or TCPIP. I'm going to assume you currently use TCPIP. In which case
you need to do a nodeless install of HIS Server on each server you want to do
the OLEDB connection from, to install and license the OLEDB driver. If it's not
from servers you want to do this, and in fact it's from a whole bunch of
clients, then you need to talk to MS sales/licensing as they'll have to do a
special deal for you, as the "official" policy is for a server license for every
machine that connects, which just doesn't make financial sense for client
connectivity.

I'm trying to do some setup of HIS now, but all I know about the mainframe
connection is what is coming out of Extra (IP address, Terminal Type, and
Port #).
How can I setup HIS to connect to the mainframe so I can point the HIS
3270Clients at HIS and they get to the login page.
Any thoughts? Thanks!
