Strange Files after DFS creation |
|
|
I am having difficulty installing and configuring DFS. I thought I had
everything correct with my DFS root of \\domain.local\Global
For the Global root, I had 5 root targets of \\server1\global
\\server2\global etc...
Under the Global root I then created several Links such as Applications,
Software, Updates etc..Each link has multiple link targets such as
\\server1\software \\server2\software etc...
So everything was going great, I could browse to \\domain\Global\Software
until about 30 minutes later when inside of the \\domain\Global folder there
were lots of extra folders along the lines of Software_NTFRS_xxxxxxx
Obviously I have screwed something up as these folders are appearing
underneath my global share, and have replicated to all the other servers. I
then decided to scrap the entire DFS root and start over, but now I can't
remove the folders out of the Global share on any of the 5 servers.
Help!
First off please someone tell me how to get rid of these extra folders.
Thank you all in advance,

These are called morphed folders. FRS creates a morphed folder when
resolving a name conflict between two or more identically named directories
that originate on different replica members. FRS identifies the conflict
during replication, and the receiving member protects the original copy of
the folder and renames (morphs) the later inbound copy of the folder. The
morphed folder names have a suffix of "_NTFRS_xxxxxxxx," where "xxxxxxxx"
represents eight random hexadecimal digits.
Resolution
To recover from this condition, the best practice is to rename the original
folders and the morphed folders and wait for the renamed folders to
propagate to all replica members. This will ensure that the folders have a
common name throughout the replica set and have file GUIDS that match on all
members. Note that you cannot just delete the unwanted folder and rename the
other one as this could lead to even more naming conflicts.
After the rename has propagated, choose the one you want to keep, and rename
it back to the original name, and then you can safely delete the remaining
morphed folders.
For more information about cleaning up morphed folders, see article 328492,
"Folder Name Is Changed to FolderName_NTFRS_<xxxxxxxx>" at
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=328492.
Important
Before deleting any of the folders, it is a best practice to ensure you have
a backup of the original (and complete) folder.
For more information about FRS, check out www.microsoft.com/frs. I highly
recommend using our FRS monitoring tool Ultrasound to help you ensure that
FRS is running smoothly.
