I'm new to Sharepoint and just trying to get a handle on the terminology and
functionality. I'm using Windows Sharepoint Services and not Portal Server.

stsadm can be used to backup and restore site collections. A site
collection is a top-level site and optionally one or more sub sites below
the top-level site.. On one server I could have 3 top-level sites, each
with subsites. In this case I would have 3 site collections. Each
top-level site would have it's own security which could be passed down to
its subsites. Is this correct?

If I have a top-level site that has 10 subsites, stsadm can be used to back
up everything, the top-level site and the 10 subsites, correct?

stsadm cannot be used to backup and/or restore just one of the subsites,
correct? For that I would have to use smigrate but that would not back up
everything, correct?

Thanks in advance
Terry

On your backup needs We use a different route with other tools so I can't
advise. But with access rights you are correct. You can also create site
groups that would allow say those members only access to 3 of the ten sites.
I have many site groups setup! For example I have an issues log on one site.
And there is a group of people on that I only want to be able to access the
issues log on that site and nothing else. So I reduced the rights in this
site group to only allow the people in this group to have access to the
issues log on the site and nothing else. Has worked great for me. And a
person can also be a member of more then one site group. You might want to
document your site groups if they start growing large so you know what each
group is for.
