Hi,

I have a Windows machine say W1.

W1 has the MOM Agent installed on it and we have a custom Application say
App1, that runs as a "Windows Service" on W1.

We have another Windows machine say, W2.
W2 has the MOM 2005 installed on it. How can we use MOM on W2 to monitor the
state of the "Windows Service" running on W1???

Thanks and Regards,
Smita

Hi,

You can download the MOM resource Kit and run the management pack wizard on
W1 to create a management pack for this service, then import the management
pack into MOM.

Hi,

Yesterday, I explored the MOM Resource kit and used the Management Pack
Wizard to create a management pack to monitor a Windows Service running on
my local machine. This local machine also has MOM installed on it.
This worked successfully. I received alerts in MOM Operator console when I
stopped the service.

However, then I used the same Wizard to create a Management Pack for
monitoring theWindows Service on a remote machine. But somehow this does not
seem to work.

I performed the following steps,

1. I have Windows machine, W1. W1 has MOM 2005 installed on it. Using the MP
Wizard I created a Management Pack to monitor a Windows service running on
another machine, W2.
2. I imported the Management Pack into MOM on W1.
3. When I stop the Windows service running on W2, I don't receive any alerts
in the MOM Operator console of W1.

I have a lot of questions in mind in this regards,
1. Through the MP Wizard two rules get created, The "Service is not running
rule" which is responsible for generating alerts, and
2. The Service Discovery rule. This rule uses the timed event provider which
I changed to 15secs from 1hour. The rule launches a "Service discovery
script" in
Response. The Service Discovery script is a VB Script which creates a
Discovery Object, sets certain properties and submits the discovery object
back to
MOM.
- I didn't really understand the purpose of this script.
- When I was monitoring the Windows service on a local machine that has
MOM installed, I disabled the Service discovery script. I still continued to
receive the
alerts in MOM when I stopped the service.
- Moreover, when monitoring a Windows service on a remote machine from
MOM, how does MOM receive the alerts.
What is the role of a MOM Agent???
Where should it be installed. On machine W1, on machine W2 or both???
How does MOM Agent on a remote machine communicate with the MOM
Server???
How will I receive alerts into MOM from the remote machine. - Actually
I Included the remote computer W2 having the Windows service that I want to
monitor from W1. But that does not seem o help.
What is it more that I need to do???

Sorry for so many questions. But answers will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Smita

Use agentless monitoring!
that will make the MOM server (W2?) read the agentless machines (W1)
Eventlog and resond to it etc

or better yet, just have W2 install the MOM agent on W1
