Is there an internal setting in MOM 2005 that allows the automatic
creation of scheduled database backups like in SMS?

Can for example DB2 be used to host some of the data collected by MOM
or does it have to be Microsoft SQL server in any case?

Best regards,

Question 1
Not that I am aware of. There is, however, a chapter in the MOM 2005
Operations Guide on backup (chapter 5):

Download (word files):

Question 2
Must be SQL Server 2000 sp3a. Supported Configurations document:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/mom/mom2005/supconfigs.mspx
