Upgrade my windows 2000 network to windows 2003 |
|
|
Will this solution work?
Buy a new server, install Windows 2003, run DC promo to add this new server
to my already existing Windows 2000 network, move the FSMO roles to this new
server and confirm the replication of objects, demote the old Windows 2000 AD
server, do a fresh Windows 2003 install on the the old Windows 2000 AD
server, run DC promo to add it to my domain.
I want to use this method because i would like to tear down my old Windows
2000 server and install a fresh copy of Windows 2003 while keeping my
existing AD domain
Thanks in advanced

Hello Josiah,
Thanks for your post.
You plan is good. I will add some part regarding DNS, DHCP. Please have a
look at the standard steps below to perform a "not in place" upgrade.
As a kind reminder, please backup the whole system before you take any
action. Also, it is best if you perform the upgrade process during a
non-business time such as the weekend. :)
Performing a "not in place" upgrade:
===========================
1. Run Adprep /forestprep, Adprep /domainprep on win2k DC.
2. Install win2k3 on your new machine and join it to the win2k domain.
3. Promote win2k3 to be an additional DC. This process will replicate
user/computer accounts from 2k to 2k3.
4. Install AD-integrated DNS on 2k3, this process will auto replicate DNS
from 2k to 2k3.
5. Move Global Catalog to the new server.
6. Switch FSMO Roles to the new server.
7. Add DHCP role to the new server.
Please refer to the following KB:

Re: Upgrade my windows 2000 network to windows 2003 |

Hi,
Sorry to hijack this post, but I am in the exact same position, and I
have a couple of questions:
- How to check to see if the new server has the Global Catalog, and how
to move it if we have to...
-How to move the DNS server from the old w2k server to the new w2k3
server.
At this point, I have done all the proper steps (I think), including
moving the FSMO roles.
I now have the following roles up and running: File server, Print
server, Active directory. I have not ' turned off' anything in the old
w2k server, except the shares (files and printers), which are now on
the new server.
If have the DNS role installed, but NOT CONFIGURED. I think I may have
chosen not to 'integrate' DNS when I setup the AD. I can see both
servers in AD.
I am puzzled as to what to do next: Is it possible to configure the new
DNS from the old DNS? I have found a reference to a script that claims
to export/import the DNS configuration, but I have also read that with
AD, it should be 'automatic'.... If I start the DNS cnfiguration
wizard, it starts asking questions I have not researched yet... I do
not want to mess this up!
My objective is to move everything to the new server, then rebuild the
old machine with win2k3, and then share some of the roles between the
two.
Thanks for any input on this.

Hello,
I understand that your question is related to the process of a "not in
place" upgrade. However, in order to keep the thread clean, please open a
new thread and give me more information about your questions and the steps
you have done since your situation may be different from this one.
Thanks for your understanding.
