DNS / Domain issues? |
|
|
Ok, I installed Windows Server 2003 Standard, activated Windows, no problems
there. Configured printer, and setup the PrintServer, no problems there.
Here is my problem, where I need some guidance:
I have 4 computers, all with Windows XP Professional, and my 1 computer with
Windows Server 2003. I want to setup many user accounts (about 35), and have
the 4 computers linked to login from the accounts made on the server. By
reading up, and trying my best, I figured that it is Active Directory that I
want, so I start the setup wizard for Active Directory. It then says it
needs DNS, so I let it automatically setup DNS. This may be where I am going
wrong.
"Note: This information is intended for a network administrator. If you are
not your network's administrator, notify the administrator that you received
this information, which has been recorded in the file
C:\WINDOWS\debug\dcdiag.txt.
The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location
(SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain
cadet-server.acad.umass.edu:
The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
(error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)
The query was for the SRV record for
_ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.cadet-server.acad.umass.edu
Common causes of this error include the following:
- The DNS SRV record is not registered in DNS.
- One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child
zone:
cadet-server.acad.umass.edu
acad.umass.edu
umass.edu
edu
.. (the root zone)
For information about correcting this problem, click Help."
The network I have: Each computer gets an IP through the university DHCP
server. The computer with Server installed has a static IP, setup by the IT
department.
What do I use for my DNS - I assume I use the university DNS servers so I
can go online. They gave me a host, which is cadet-server.acad.umass.edu.
When I go to my Windows XP machine, and go to my computer, and click on join
a domain, and type that in, it says it cannot connect to the domain.
Any help would be appreciated, and if you need to know any settings that I
have, let me know and I will tell you. Any help is most appreciated, I have
been searching the web for hours to find a solution, but with no luck. I
hope using Windows Server wasn't a mistake...
Thanks in advance,
Jim |

It is best to use the DC for DNS, because it supports secure dynamic
updates.
But, a lot of the schools won't let you and require you to use their DNS
servers. If this is the case, contact the DNS admin and give him a copy of
the netlogon.dns file from the DC and give the DC a static IP address.
Now the real problem, you say they gave you a host name, but you used the
host name for your domain name.
Your domain name is cadet-server.acad.umass.edu, making your DC something
like "server.cadet-server.acad.umass.edu" you will now need to have the DNS
admin create a subdomain "cadet-server.acad.umass.edu" and create the SRV
and host records in it.
Just give the DNS admin a copy of the netlogon.dns file from the DC.

Hello Kevin,
What should I do here:
----------------------
Diagnostic Results
The registration diagnostic has been run 1 time.
The wizard encountered an error while trying to determine if the DNS server
with which this domain controller will register supports dynamic updates.
For more information, including steps to correct this problem, see Help.
Details
The primary DNS server tested was: ns0.umass.edu (128.119.175.21)
The zone was: acad.umass.edu
The test for dynamic DNS update support returned:
"DNS bad key."
(error code 0x00002339 RCODE_BADKEY)
--------------
Should I click on the install and configure the DNS server on this computer
and set this computer to use this DNS server as its perferred DNS server?
Would that enable secure dynamic updates or is this not needed. Also, how do
I setup DNS forwarding so the clients (if i can get them connected) can see
the real (isp) DNS server to go on the internet?
Thanks

The AD DNS server should be able to resolve all internet names if it is able
to contact the root hint servers. Check that the root "." zone has been
removed.
You need to disable DDNS registration on this DC and send the content of the
%systemroot%\system32\config\netlogon.dns file to the University DNS admin.
Alternately you can point only the DC to its own address for DNS which will
let it register its records, leave dynamic registration enabled then send
the content of the %systemroot%\system32\config\netlogon.dns file to the DNS
admin so all the records will be in the school DNS the additional record you
need the DNS admin to create will be for the DCs host name e.g.
"server.cadet-server.acad.umass.edu"
A posting of the ipconfig /all of the DC and the AD domain name from ADUC
will help me.
At any rate all domain members must be able to resolve both the AD domain
name and the DCs host name, even though they are the same IP address in
addition to the SRV records for the domain.

Hi Kevin,
Also, before I setup active directory, I set my preferred DNS server address
to the same as the IP of my computer, but after the running the wizards
(dcpromo), it changed to 127.0.0.1, is this ok? And I added the two

server address on the XP machines to my IP, leave them with the university
DNS, or have the preferred as my IP, and the DNS Alternate as the university?

Kevin,
Also one thing that you might need to know:
Under Forward Lookup Zones, listed are
_msdcs.cadet.server.acad.umass.edu
cadet.server.acad.umass.edu
There are no reverse lookup zones.
Thanks,
Jim

As I suspected, when you created this you made the AD Root domain below the
public name, but you went to the fifth level. For the name
"cadet.server.acad.umass.edu" provided this is the name you see in ADUC.
It is perfectly OK but all AD records must resolve under this name, such as
_msdcs.cadet.server.acad.umass.edu and you need a forward lookup zone for
this name. You should remove the extra DNS servers from the DC DNS list, it
need only point to its own address 128.119.192.130. Remove the 127.0.0.1,
128.119.166.14 and 128.119.175.14.
The DNS admin should also create an "A" record named
"server.cadet.server.acad.umass.edu" with the DCs address 128.119.192.130.
Along with the content of the Netlogon.dns file.

to 127.0.0.1, is this ok? And I added the two university
DNS servers under the forwarding option. Now, do I
change the DNS server address on the XP machines to my
IP, leave them with the university DNS, or have the
preferred as my IP, and the DNS Alternate as the
university?
Here is a ipconfig /all log:

Along with the content of the Netlogon.dns file.

work, and be easier, if I renamed it from
cadet.server.acad.umass.edu to cadet-server.acad.umass.edu

It would work, it is possible to rename a Win2k3 domain, but I would not say
it is easier. It would be just as easy to create the records with the domain
you have, but a shorter DNS name would be less confusing.
As for as renaming the domain, if you haven't created many users yet, I may
be easier to demote and repromote than to rename.
