Hi,

I have a question regarding _MSDCS zone on Windows 2003 DNS server.
Currently I have _msdcs.company.dom forward lookup zone seperate from our
regular company.dom forward lookup zone as it should on Windows 2003. There
is also _msdcs subfolder under company.dom that is not supposed to be used
under Windows 2003 DNS default set up. Everything is working fine except
after we added our 3rd DC, the DC added its entry to both _MSDCS subfolder
under company.dom and _msdcs.company.dom zone.

Before we added our last DC _msdcs subfolder under company.dom was showing
"same are parent folder" and listing our DNS servers.

What would be the best way to clean up and reconfigure our _msdcs subfolder
to show "same as prarent folder" and make it points to DNS servers?

Thank You

Woody

As it should, the _msdcs subfolder in the company.dom zone is actually a
delegation, it only holds NS records for the DNS servers holding the
_msdcs.company.dom Forward Lookup Zone, which actully holds the _mdscs data.
This was new behavior added to Win2k3 that replicates the _msdcs.company.dom
to all Win2k3 DNS servers in the forest. It is the _msdcs.company.dom zone
that has the global catalog records for the entire forest, including any
child domains.

Kevin,

Thank you very much for the info.
So, should I delete _MSDCS subfolder and set up a delegation for _MSDCS
subfolder? I'm trying to return it to original settting.
One more question, what is it mean when you see an icon of an file folder
with white note page infront of it. It shows up on DNS console. I guessed i
might be something to do with delegation.
