Perhaps to satisfy my own curiosity, I will stop the WINS
server on our machine (we only have the one) and see what
happens :)

At the very least, I should probably refresh my own
knowledge on NetBIOS and WINS by reading a whitepaper or
two.

Probably a good idea to stop the WINS service before removing it, you may
find as I did that WINS is more reliable at populating Network Places than
just relying on NetBIOS broadcasts. You might give it a month or so and keep
your ears open for complaints. It may take some time for minor problems to
bubble to the top.
BTW, I hope your not keeping an NT4 machine around just to do WINS, it _is_
included on later Win2k and Win2k3.

:) No, it did a few other minor thing as well.. print server etc.
Gradually getting everyone moved over to the new boxes and had planned to
down this one. Was curious if I should even bother bringing up another WINS
server on a 2k3 box once the 4.0 machine is kyboshed.

I would...and did.

Here is Microsoft's opinion on WINS & Exchange 2003.

Well since 3.5 we've had WINS boxes running. Our org is pretty straight
forward -- two offices over VPN link. All servers are 2003 native running
AD integrated DNS w/o issues, our exchange version is also 2003 in native
mode. Assuming WINS is axed, UNC pathnames will still continue to
function as expected yes? We have an older box now that is doing our WINS
and printing for a few clients but I'd like to down this one (it's an NT
4.0 member).

Thanks for your feedback and any quirks I should be on the lookout for.

That is interesting, thanks for the link Neo. I recall specifically in my
Ex 2003 course the mct said 'finally exchange doesn't depend on WINS' or
something along those lines. Anyhow, as others have mentioned, and for what
is involved - I'll sprout up another WINS server once we down the 4.0 one.

Thanks all.

They are (practically) free (since you already own Windows
Server, and require very little effort if the network is small.

Those with large networks hopefully have more
staff or at least more experience with keeping
things running.

Free and easy. Not much in life is like that. <GRIN>
