Confused while configuring Time Sync... NTP vs. SNTP..? |
|
|
I want to configure SBS2003 to sync with our ISPs NTP server
(ntp.demon.co.uk). I'm assuming that I only need to do this once at
SBS2003, and AD will then cause the (XP Pro) workstations to sync to itself.
The documentation is confusing, as it mentions both NTP and SNTP; I'm
not sure I understand the implications of this... the ISPs server name
suggests NTP, and I'm not sure whether this will work.
Any tips?
Going on from this, our router/firewall also offers NTP functionality;
it'll sync with external, public NTP servers and also offers NTP
functionality to the LAN. I'm thinking I could get SBS2003 to sync with
this instead... thoughts?
Thanks,

Pretty much all of these time servers will use SNTP the lightweight version
of NTP. The differences between the two are obscure and can be ignored. The
demon hostname ntp.demon.co.uk is just that, a hostname so does not
represent the real services that are published with that name.
as far as synching with your router, I do not know how reliable it is at
providing this service. I would personally just do it from the server and
avoid the additional layer.
