OVERVIEW
I just installed SBS2003 for a new business, and creating a test Domain Name
(XXXX.com). This is the only computer on the network, and there's only one
user set up. The goal was to test the SBS2003 setup while finding a name for
the business and domain name for the website / email / machine.

OBJECTIVE
I hope to reconfigure the machine to the new registered domain name before
adding the additional users.

ATTEMPTS
Everything I've read to date, indicates I should (have to) reinstall SB2003
in order to change the Domain Controller effectively. I've read it's
"possible" to demote the domain controller, rename, and then promote again...
but i don't know exact requirements, or how difficult it is given the network
configuration (only one machine). I should mention the one caveat with
reinstalling the OS is the machine is hosted remotely, and although I do have
remote administration enabled, I'd prefer to avoid going to the physical
machine.

thanks in advance for your help!

This is totally true. You CANNOT rename a SBS due to its tight
AD/Exchange integration.

you SHOULD NOT name your AD DNS namespace the same as your internet FQDN.

reinstall the server and use anything.lan for your AD DNS namespace. The
server will become aware of your internet FQDN when you run the CEICW.
