Remote Desktop connections / and/or Scheduled Task to reboot |
|
|
Hi,
I have an SBS2003 server for my small business. My other developers log in
via RD.
We often get the max number of connections exceeded, and typically I can go
in and kill one of the sessions, and the user can log in.
When I go into Terminal Services it says " No Terminal Service license
server is available... I have MSDN, so my first question is, how can I
establish this box as a Terminal Service server?
My second question is, failing the creation of a license server, is there a
way I can run a scheduled task to reboot my SBS 2003 server every night, to
clear out any dsiabled sessions...
Thanks,
Dave |

Your users are logging directly into the SBS? Why?

Hey Merv,
I have developers off-site, who are not part of my domain, but I need them
to do work on me on this box. (I assume the alternative, and probably
"correct" way is to create user accounts for them - which I have done - and
then what?)
Anyway, they are all trusted users, and even log in as admin sometimes.
(Please let me know if this is making it easier for others to hack away.)
Thanks,
Dave

"Trusted" has nothing to do with it. You're taking a chance that these
users might bring down your entire LAN. The SBS server is not a
workstation. The correct way would be to have them use RWW or RDP into a
workstation(s) on the LAN and then do their work. A couple of (relatively)
inexpensive workstations dedicated to their (remote) use is cheap compared
to having to rebuild the entire server if something goes wrong. Security is
another issue but we'll save that for later.

Yes, that is what happens. If the user doesn't log off, or the connection
terminates for some reason, we get 'stale' connections which I have to purge
for them to be able to log in again.
Ter Terminal Server Licensing components is not installed (it appears in the
list, but the box is not checked).
If there is a better way, please let me know! Thanks,

In Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs | Add/Remove Windows Components
Do you have Terminal Server Licensing installed? If so, uninstall it and
reboot.

Merv,
Thanks for your replies. Unfortunately, I think we have to stick with the
current situation for now. First of all, this is pretty much a tand-alone
SBS node. We are working with Microsoft CRM, and really need to be on the
box to code, test and share files. But thanks for giving me something
else
to worry about! (Glad I bought that 160GB USB drive for backup recently!)
So, given that I'm working this way, is there anything I can do to stop
the
"out of license" message? Thanks again,
Dave

Maybe this...
To set the maximum time a disconnected (TS) session remains active
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/WindowsServ/2003/enterprise/proddocs/en-us/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/WindowsServ/2003/enterprise/proddocs/en-us/ts_usrex_h_500.asp
The default is: Never
Reset this to: 1 minute
