We are running Portal server on our Web servers in our DMZ. We need to back
them up but I don't want to have to install SQL on those machines. Can I
instead install SQL on the remote DB server? Are there any other options?

you can specify a remote sql server in your sharepoint portal server.

I have specified a remote sql in the portal. My question is since I don't
want to install client tools on the portal server (which is a requirement for
spsbackup) can I use spsbackup.exe on the remote sql server instead of the
portal servers?

sorry, reading back over my original email and title line I can see where
that was confusing. I am strictly talking about the SQL requirement for
spsbackup.
