I need to rename a domain and I am trying to avoid using the Tool. Please let
me know if the following will work:
--
I upgraded a NT 4.0 PDC to Windows 2003. Made an error typing domain name
and put the netbois name of the Server as the domain name. So I need to
change the pdc1.com to domain1.com.
Just have this one Server that is file, print, AD and there is no Exchange
or SQL server on the Network.
--
Since we are in Native mode the users still see the old domain name when
loggin on and all shares and permissions are working fine. The Server has
trust relationship with another NT 4.0 Server in their other office and that
is working fine also. No Exchange or SQL there also.

Before I did the upgrade I did setup a BDC, synched it, disconnected PDC,
upgraded this BDC to PDC and then disconnected it from the network. Its
sitting disconnected and is my hope. :)
I am thinking of:

1. Disconnecting this new Windows 2003 Server from network
2. Connecting and Upgrading the former BDC with correct domain name
3. Making sure everyone can logon and stuff
4. Running DCPROMO on current disconnected PDC1 (with incorrect domain) and
not having it as Domain Controller
5. Leave it as is as member server, we were going to Add this New Server
(which is the current BDC)

Do you guys think the above will work?.
The reason I am trying to avoid using Domain Rename tool is because I will
need to raise the function level to Windows 2003 before I run it. Since
everything is running fine in Native mode even with incorrect name I don't
want to take that risk.

Move to 2k3 native and use the tool. The tool method is much less risky than
your proposed method and fully supported by MS.

Depending how long you have left the BDC offline, many issues may arise like
computer account password changes outdated, user password changes.
