Windows 2003 DC and more than 4GB RAM |
|
|
Can the AD services (LSASS, etc) on a Windows 2003 DC running
enterprise edition take advantage of more than 4GB RAM? Is
it limited by the 2GB application addressing issue? Thx |

Excedding 4GB is not much if any help for AD unless you have a ton of other crap
running on the machine which you shouldn't. If you want to use that space for
DIT caching you want to look at the 64 Bit verions of Windows Server 2003.
/3GB switch is useful in Windows 2000 on or around 512MB of RAM, it changes how
the DIT cache functions. On Windows Server 2003 you get the benefit when going
to /3GB at around 2GB of RAM if I recall correctly. Of course in either case if
your DIT is 100MB, /3GB probably wouldn't buy you anything.

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=308356 According to this, 2Gb is the most
amount of physical memory AD can use although I have seen many arguments
elsewhere on whether or not the /3gb switch will be of any help or not.

Remember that the /3GB switch is only applicable to Virtual Memory and
doesn't have any effect on physical memory. As Joe points out AD will benefit
from the /3GB switch if your DIT is fairly large, but this benefit can come
into play no even if you don't have more than 2GB of ram.
