I have been receiving the following message for the last few months as I logon to the SBS Console:

Microsoft Exchange MTA encountered a problem and needs to close

There is the option to either Send the Error data to Microsoft (which I have done occasionally) or Do Not Send. Either way, the
message immediately reappears.

Checking the Application log I find the following message:-

Faulting application emsmta.exe version 6.5.6944.0 address 0x00116771

The MTA stacks service is not started, trying to start it gives error 1067

Despite all this I can send and receive messages without a problem

Has anybody any idea what might be wrong or any suggestions as to how I might go about fixing it?

Thanks for any help

The MTA Stacks service is not used in SBS 2003, and it's startup type is set
to Disabled by default. If you return it to disabled, that should solve
your problem. (MTA is generally used when you have Exchange 5.5 servers in
your network).
