Uninstalling Exchange |
|
|
Hello all,
I'm trying to uninstall Exchange 2003 from my SBS2003 Premium box, but
when I try to select Remove for the Exchange Server component in the
add/remove components screen, I get the following message (please, bear
with the translation, I have the Spanish version :))
The action "Remove" cannot be assigned to the "Microsoft Exchange
Colaboration and messaging services" component:
-One or more users are currently using a mailbox in this server. You
have to move them to a mailbox store on a different server or disable
mail reception for them before uninstalling this server.
I *think* I've already delete the exchange attributes from the single
user I tested, but something remains active somewhere.
Any help will be gratly appreciated,
Best regards,
Miguel |

You must go to each and every user in the Exchange Manager
Expand Servers
Expand First Storage Group
Expand Mailbox Store
Click on Mailboxes
Then right click each mailbox and choose Exchange Tasks Then walk through
the wizard to remove the mailbox for each user

Nope, just the three I mentioned in my post:
System Operator
SMTP {<server_name>...}
SystemMailbox {...}

Hi Cris,
The reason is that I have to install an Exchange 2003 on another box,
and hence won't be using the one in SBS.
Best regards,
Miguel

Why are you un-installing Exchange, I can't for the life of me imagine why
you would want to do this, but if you are not going to use it (again having
SBS and not using Exchange doesn't make sense to me). Just permanently
disable all the Exchange services

Hi susan,
Yes we are. We have an additional Exchange Server 2003 standard, and
that is the one I planned to install in the second box.
I know I can disable all the Exchange services, but being an obsessive
geek, I just wanted to uninstall the Exchanghe component from the
SBS2003 box.
Best regards,
Miguel

Just seems like a waste of resources when SBS can handle Exchange just
fine. Especially when Exchange standard doesn't get you anything more
than you already have.

Hi Susan,
I appreciate your advise, but let's say that I want/have been asked to
physically separate the SBS2003 box and the Exchange box. As I said, I
can disable the Exchange services in the SBS2003 and go ahead and set up
the new box. I just wanted to uninstall the Exchange component, but so
far, I haven't succeeded. Call me crazy, but I like my servers to have
exactly what they need to perform their role, no more, no less ;)
Best regards,
Miguel

Susan and I recognize that sometimes there are influences which we have no
control over
In your case I'd almost be willing to suggest that this requirement is due
to the influence of an IT implementer who has no experience with SBS and has
always had Exchange on a separate box.
SBS was specifically developed to run all these applications on one box and
from the customer base that exists internationally you have to believe that
it works pretty well.
Assuming again that this is that old "reduncancy" issue and you make your
extra box a DC because if SBS goes down and there is no additional DC folks
cant get into exchange anyway. Now wait, then aren't we then in the same
boat as with SBS.

Re: Uninstalling Exchange |

Point taken Cris,
I'll talk to the IT manager about this. Then it will be his call either
to keep all in one SBS box ore to move to Windows server/Exchange in
separate boxes.
Still, from a software design point of view, It still itches me that I
cannot cleanly remove a component, but that really is a minor issue ;)
Best regards,
Miguel
