Replacing SBS2003 w/ win2000Server and Exchange 2000 |
|
|
I had a SBS 2003 w/ exchange running a LAN with another win2000Server. The
SBS2003 server had a hardware failure. I was trying to rebuild the sbs 2003
server but through MS learned that it is not advisable to run sbs 2003 on a
network with another windows server (the other win2k server that is/was
already present).
So... I am planning to install a new server with win2k and Exchange 2k. I
have a backup (NT Backup)of the old Exchange that was running on the old
SBS2003 Server. Can I restore the Exchange 2003 files to the new instance of
Exchange/Win2k Server?
What do I need to do. Thanks in advance. |

Huh? You can have a member server that attaches to the SBS, SBS just
have to hold on the server roles.
Oh gawd I would not install Win2k and Exchange 2k those are 5 year old
operating systems... why in the world do you want to downgrade?
I have a member server in my network no sweat.

Eric,
It sounds like to me that you are not getting the useful information from
PSS on this situation.
Most importantly, if you paid for that support call, either you didnt' ask
the right questions, or you weren't give the right advice. You should be
able to get support from PSS on putting your existing SBS installation back
online with different hardware using a restore from backup. That is a
documented and supported method from PSS using Microsoft processes having
nothing to do with Swing Migration.
This is the KB and PSS should have offered to support you doing this (the
process works for SBS 2003 as well):
How to perform a disaster recovery restoration of Active Directory on a
computer with a different hardware configuration
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;263532&Product=win2000
Failing your getting support from PSS, I can assist you as well offline.
Given that you are in a server down situation, can I offer that you contact
me directly. You can use the process of Swing Migration to recover your
existing SBS with a clean install, or you could do a recovery of the SBS
from backup on different hardware.
In addition, you are welcome to continue to seek support via the newsgroup
if you prefer, and I will try to keep an eye on the process you pursue, but
the one thing I will be very clear on is that I don't think you should
attempt what you just mentioned. I believe your project goal should be to
either restore the old SBS from backup to new hardware, or to reconstruct
the new SBS on new hardware with Swing Migration.

Jeff,
Too late i already did the reinstall of the windows2000 server. I am trying
to add it to the existing domain as an additional DC but I get a "cc26.local"
(DNS for the existing domain) cannot be contacted. I did spend the money to
contact pss they told me this would be the best way to do this... this is
what they had to say....
If you want 2 domain controllers on the same LAN, then 1 cannot be SBS 2003,
for redundancy atleast. They also said if I wanted to restore the SBS 2003
then I would have to take all my users down and create the SBS2003 domain as
a standalone and then reconnect them. I cannot do this. So I asked if we can
use a full install of win2k server and make that an additional dc.
That's where I am now. Please advise. My email address is
imobius@hotmail.com if you could help me offline. Thanks.

Do you have the name and SRX number on this?
This is totally incorrect. YOU CAN have a backup domain controller.
