Hi,

I have

Cable modem --> Netgear WGT624 wireless router --> SBS 2003 --> Netgear
MR814 wireless router --> 4 computers including an IBM T40 laptop with a
wired network card and a wirless 802.11b wirless card.

My netgear WGT 624 is a DHCP and so is my SBS 2003, the IP addresses do not
overlap.

My netgear MR 814 is just a router, no DHCP functions or firewalls or any
other tasks that the router can offer.

My laptop can connect to the network wirelessly through the WGT624

When I try to connect wirelessly to the MR814 it gives me limited or no
connectivty error message and it has a self created IP address instead of one
assigned by the SBS.

Questions:

How do I get the IP address to the laptop from the server through the
wireless connection?

Normally the MR 814 router can be accessed through 192.168.0.1 address, but
since I disabled it as a DHCP I was not able to get back into its menu,
how do get back in?
How do I find out its new IP address as assigned to it from the SBS server?

Many thanks,

Nick

Hi Nick,

I presume you have two NICs in the SBS.

Is the MR814 capable of setup as an Access Point ? That is the functionality
you need so that wireless devices can get an IP from the SBS DHCP server.

If you look in DHCP or WINS, you may be able to see what IP the device has,
and connect to it.

Hi Les,

Yes I do have 2 NICs. As for my router, I thought that by checking off the
DHCP box I would be turning it into an access point, is there another way to
confirm?

As for my connections, I recieved the following information from DHCP:

003 Router Standard 192.168.16.2
006 DNS Server Standard 192.168.16.2
015 DNS Domain Name Standard crmts.local
044 wins/nbns server Standard 192.168.16.2
046 wins/nbt node type Standard 192.168.16.2
046 wins/nbt node type Standard 0x8

When I type 192.168.16.2 in the URL it just diaplays is in the main screen
at a higher point "enlarged" instead of taking me into the router's menu.

Please let me know if I am doing somnething wrong.

Thanks,

In my experience, not all gateway routers can function as an access point,
allthough my experience in using them for this purpose is limited. A device
that is specifically an Access Point would probably be a better choice.

I would put the router in the same subnet with an unused IP...
like192.168.16.1. To reconnect to it, you would need to reset it again or
assign a static IP address to a workstation in the 192.168.0.x range.

Thanks everyone. Javier had the answer, I reset the router, and assigened it
an IP address from the range, I had also to set the DNS, subnet mask and few
other parameters, but now it seems to be working fine. Now it is time to set
up VPN :)

many thanks,
