Greetings,
I have another question as I am planning the move from SBS4.5 to 2003
Standard (on brand new box)
"measure twice and cut once"...

1. Can SBS 4.5 exist as a BDC on the network with my Temp server as the NT4
PDC?, or must the SBS 4.5 be disconnected from the network with my Temp
server as the PDC?

I am receiving conflicting info on this subject... and you MVPs are all
knowing :-)
- some say disconnect SBS 4.5 before promoting another server to a PDC
- others say SBS 4.5 will be a BDC with out any problems..

any help appreciated..
thanks!

You did read the 4.5 migration white paper right?

HI,

SBS can never be demoted, so that won't be possible. You can however use a
NT4 temp server and join it to the domain, then disconnect it and promote
it. You would then upgrade the temp server to 2003, but make sure the
partition is big enough.

The official migration papers are here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/sbs/upgrade/default.mspx

And the alternative which does work with a temp server as well is
www.sbsmigration.com, for the swing it method from Jeff Middleton.

That is my problem..
Guides I eventually found from surfing Technet stated that SBS 4.5 can only
function as a PDC and not a BDC. I dont have the article name with me at the
moment.

KB Article 555073; Scenario A, subsection 2, step f: "demote the original
PDC to a BDC, and promote the new BDC to the PDC" the original PDC is the
SBS 4.5 as I read it... this indicates that SBS 4.5 can function as a BDC

The conflicting articles impact how I move applications and user data
depending on which is correct...

If you would point me to a document with info that is known to be correct
that would be just dandy...
