I've seen this question popup in the archives of this newsgroup, but it
doesn't sound like an answer has been posted...so here goes. I have a SBS
2003 Std server setup at a colocation facility. I need to get access to file
shares on that machine via the internet. I have now tried RWW and VPN and
neither of these is working correctly.

For the VPN, I can connect without a problem, but when I try to browse to
the machine name or IP address, I get a network path not found error. I've
tried letting the SBS wizard configure the VPN and I've used the standard
windows 2K3 RRAS wizard to configure it, but neither has let me get further
than simply opening the VPN.

After looking through this newsgroup, I saw the suggestion of using RWW,
well, when I click that link on the server's default webpage, I get a 403 -
Forbidden error (I've now re-run the "connect to the internet" wizard to make
sure everything was set correctly) with no change. I actually get the 403
error from the wan AND lan which seems strange...even from on the server
itself I get the same error.

Any suggestions on where to go from here to get file sharing working?

Ahhh thanks for your reply Marina ... not quite what I meant though

when VPN is connected, either using mapped drives on the remote
workstation or explorer \\servername\sharename

using RWW is fine, even very good for using database apps, but not
entirely practical for a dialup connection, especially when the user
just wants to quickly retrieve a file.

when logged on with an account with admin rights there it's possible to
browse the network shares ( \\serevername\ ) and see all the available
shares but when loged on with a domain user (or even power user) the
only share available is the user folder share.

The ntfs and share permissions all seem fine on the share (have even
added everyone group with full control to test)

I've just run the Connection Manager tool from the RWW page, it didn't
appear to actually do anything, does anyone know what this is supposed
to do?

regards,

Jay

Ihave just installed a new sbs2003 server and have the same issues, I
have installed 5 others with no issues. On this one I can connect to
network shares if i put the server host name and IP in the local
workstation hosts file. Further investigation shows that the server LAN
card IP proerties shows the IP as 192.168.11.100 and the DHCP and WINS
servers as the same, however if I do an ipconfig /all on the server it
shows the WINS server ip as 192.168.2.100. I have searched the registry
for that IP to no avail.

In my case it look like the WINS is the problem but at the moment I
cannot find out where the problem is.

hope this helps

Marina, thanks for taking a look at this...

The VPN Section of IP Config (on my local machine) is:

PPP adapter DF Server:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :

Description . . . . . . . . . . . : WAN (PPP/SLIP) Interface

Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-53-45-00-00-00

Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.101

Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.101

DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 69.58.0.4

69.58.0.5

Primary WINS Server . . . . . . . : 69.58.21.130

The Server's IP Config looks like this:

PPP adapter RAS Server (Dial In) Interface:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :

Description . . . . . . . . . . . : WAN (PPP/SLIP) Interface

Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-53-45-00-00-00

DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.100

Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Disabled

Ethernet adapter Server Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :

Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Marvell Yukon 88E8050 PCI-E ASF
Gigabit Ethernet Controller

Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-0E-0C-4E-E3-ED

DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 69.58.21.130

Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.240

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 69.58.21.129

DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 69.58.0.4

69.58.0.5

69.58.0.28

69.58.21.130

Primary WINS Server . . . . . . . : 69.58.21.130

NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Disabled

A few more specifics in case that helps...right now, the VPN is configured
by the small business "Remote Access" wizard and it is set to use a static IP
address range instead of using DHCP...it is supposed to assign IPs of
192.168.2.100 - 192.168.2.200. The server is only accessable right now via
IP because we haven't pointed the DNS at it until we get it completely setup,
and this server has two NICs, however, only one NIC is actually connected at
the moment (if that is the issue, we can probably correct that...I know it's
preferrable to have two NICs when doing VPN access, but it'd be nice to only
use one...but like I said, we can probably do two if that will help).

I wanted to show *exactly* how it is configured. That server is completely
blank (except for SBS) so there is no sensitive data, nor is it used for
production. Once all of the issues are resolved, we will change anything
needed (IP or rebuild the server and IP). We've got to figure out what is
wrong with file sharing so I want to provide the most accurate information
possible. (Although I wouldn't have done that had it been a production
server, or even a server with anything on it...)

Hi Bryan,

Then that still is not a reason to use public IP's on the servernic(s). Try
again with private IP's.

A few more specifics in case that helps...right now, the VPN is
configured
by the small business "Remote Access" wizard and it is set to use a
static
IP
address range instead of using DHCP...it is supposed to assign IPs of
192.168.2.100 - 192.168.2.200. The server is only accessable right
now
via
IP because we haven't pointed the DNS at it until we get it completely
setup,
and this server has two NICs, however, only one NIC is actually
connected
at
the moment (if that is the issue, we can probably correct that...I
know
it's
preferrable to have two NICs when doing VPN access, but it'd be nice
to
only
use one...but like I said, we can probably do two if that will help).

Hi Adam,

Please post the ipconfig/all from the server and from the vpn client
when
vpn-ed in.

RWW and file sharing will only work if you connect as admin, as the
RDC
is
able to transfer files between the client and the server.

I've seen this question popup in the archives of this newsgroup,
but
it
doesn't sound like an answer has been posted...so here goes. I
have a
SBS
2003 Std server setup at a colocation facility. I need to get
access
to
file
shares on that machine via the internet. I have now tried RWW and
VPN
and
neither of these is working correctly.

For the VPN, I can connect without a problem, but when I try to
browse
to
the machine name or IP address, I get a network path not found
error.
I've
tried letting the SBS wizard configure the VPN and I've used the
standard
windows 2K3 RRAS wizard to configure it, but neither has let me
get
further
than simply opening the VPN.

After looking through this newsgroup, I saw the suggestion of
using
RWW,
well, when I click that link on the server's default webpage, I
get a
403 -
Forbidden error (I've now re-run the "connect to the internet"
wizard
to
make
sure everything was set correctly) with no change. I actually get
the
403
error from the wan AND lan which seems strange...even from on the
server
itself I get the same error.

Any suggestions on where to go from here to get file sharing
working?
