HIS PRINTING |
|
|
We use a package called Lognet instead of using the SNA Print service.
(The reason been that when using SNA Print, it would print only till
about half of the page and not complete the whole line. Also it would
add a blank page after every page we printed.)
The printers on HIS are created as Application LU (LUA) sessions and
are defined in Lognet as Printers and LUA as the logical Unit. From
Lognet we print either directly to IP or to the UNC path. The problem
is that the printers are continuously going into an UNBIND state on
Lognet and a SSCP state on HIS.The whole Printer connection then has
to be stopped on HIS and Lognet and reacquired on the mainframe.
The weird thing is that this worked on a server with the exact same
settings but now that we have it in production, it is causing this
problem.

If the session ins getting unbound, I would take a look at the datastream
to determine A) Who is sending the UNBIND request, and; B) what is
happening preceeding the UNBIND being sent.
You can use the SNA tracing to capture traces. (In the SNA Manager, go to
Tools / Trace Initiator).
Are there any events being logged to the Applicaiton Event Log on the HIS
2000 Server when this is occurring?
If you need any assistance in getting these traces set up, or reviewing the
traces, feel free to open a case with Microsoft Support and someone will be
more than happy to assist you in this.

Thanx for replying Jeremy
Nothing is been written to the Event Viewer. Lognet have asked me to put a
trace on as well - I am tracing tn3270 messages and LUA-api - is this
sufficient?
I have also asked the Mainframe techies to check their side to see what is
happening. The funny thing is, I have set up two other servers (on a
different network) and they do the same thing - all three are connected to a
HIS server over the WAN - all three using different dlc's though. Also,
sometimes they unbind at the same time and sometimes not. And the last thing,
There are a total of 15 LUA Printers but only the 4 busiest seem to be doing
this.

Most likely something is throwing an error along the way, and is causing

RE: HIS PRINTING |
|
|
There's a bit more to it than that. UNBIND is a normal piece of session
flow for 3270 communication. What we are looking for is what is happening
leading up to this that is causing the UNBIND to flow.
(NOTE: The following information is *only* for a SnaServer, Message trace
with *ONLY* Data Link Control turned on)
First of all, you will notice that for each frame, there is a header like
this:
----------------------------------------------- 22:35:27.0407
05160000->01020301 DLC DATA
DAF:35 OAF:01 ODAI:off Normal BBIU
RQD FMD BC EC DR1 EB
First of all, notice the line:
05160000->01020301
This indicates the direction. The number that starts with '01' is always
the Host Integration Server. In this instance, the packet is coming from
the mainframe, to the Host Integration Server. You can use this to see
what side is sending the Unbind.
The second line indicates the LU that is being communicated over. the LU
number is in HEX.
In this example, we are recieving a frame of data FROM the mainframe, over
LU#53 (53 = '0x35' in HEX).
Once you have determined what side has sent the UNBIND, then you will need
to determine WHY that it was sent, by following that LU number backwards in
the trace, and seeing what was happening prior to that being sent. If the
Host Integration Server was sending the UNBIND more traces will be needed
ot see what the Client appliaction was doing at the time to cause the
UNBIND to be sent.
If you need furhter assistance in taking/reading these traces, feel free to
open a support issue with our support team, and we will be more than happy
to assst you in diagnosing this issue further.

Thanx for replying Jeremy
Nothing is been written to the Event Viewer. Lognet have asked me to put
a
trace on as well - I am tracing tn3270 messages and LUA-api - is this
sufficient?
I have also asked the Mainframe techies to check their side to see what
is
happening. The funny thing is, I have set up two other servers (on a
different network) and they do the same thing - all three are connected
to
a
HIS server over the WAN - all three using different dlc's though. Also,
sometimes they unbind at the same time and sometimes not. And the last
thing,
There are a total of 15 LUA Printers but only the 4 busiest seem to be
doing
this.

happening preceeding the UNBIND being sent.
You can use the SNA tracing to capture traces. (In the SNA Manager, go
to
Tools / Trace Initiator).
Are there any events being logged to the Applicaiton Event Log on the
HIS
2000 Server when this is occurring?
If you need any assistance in getting these traces set up, or reviewing
the
traces, feel free to open a case with Microsoft Support and someone
will
be
more than happy to assist you in this.

The weird thing is that this worked on a server with the exact same
settings but now that we have it in production, it is causing this
problem.
PLEASE HELP

Yes '0xFC' = LU#252.
However, you will need to go back furhter in the trace to see what is
happening to cause the SHUTC to be sent. This snippet of trace is already
half-way through being shut down. You should go back probably 5-6 frames
to see why this secuence is occurring.

From what you have posted here, it appears to be a pretty standard shutdown
of the session by the host. After this, does the host send another BIND?
What is the status of the LU in the Manager when this is failing? Are
there any events getting logged in the Applicaiton Event Log?

RE: HIS PRINTING |

Hi Jermey
Thanx for all your help
The host does not send another bind (as far as I can see.) Normally we
acquire the printer on the mainframe which will cause the LU\printers to bind
but once thay have "unbound", their LU's change to a sscp state on HIS and
the whole connection has to be manually stopped and started. (Although we
acquire them, they remain in a sscp state or unbound until they are stopped
and started.)
There are no errors in the application event log.
I read on one of the million sites i tried that sometimes a session must not
be stopped if it is going to be continually used which is the case here. Is
this at all possible?

RE: HIS PRINTING |

When the initial connection is made to the host system, the host starts the
APPC LUs by sending an ACTLU for each LU that is configured in the host
VTAM Definition. They are not started by Host Integration Server.
If the session gets an UNBIND, either the host, or your Lognet applicaiton
needs to rebind the session. A more detailed trace analysis would be needed
to see if there are any problems, as what has been posted up to know shows
a normal session shutdown.

Hi Jermey
Thanx for all your help
The host does not send another bind (as far as I can see.) Normally we
acquire the printer on the mainframe which will cause the LU\printers to
bind
but once thay have "unbound", their LU's change to a sscp state on HIS and
the whole connection has to be manually stopped and started. (Although we
acquire them, they remain in a sscp state or unbound until they are stopped
and started.)
There are no errors in the application event log.
I read on one of the million sites i tried that sometimes a session must
not
be stopped if it is going to be continually used which is the case here. Is
this at all possible?

shutdown
of the session by the host. After this, does the host send another BIND?
What is the status of the LU in the Manager when this is failing? Are
there any events getting logged in the Applicaiton Event Log?
