Configuring TN3270 to give certain LU to certain IP address |
|
|
Using HIS 2000, to date we have been using Extra and/or the HIS client
on PCs which authenticate to AD. With this, we can specifically give an
LU to a specific user.
I now want to use tn3270 devices (specifically thin clients) which do
not authenticate - but they will always be at a specific IP address.
Now, I know how to set an address on a tn3270 LU, but contrary to the
docs, you cannot do this to multiple LUs, it will say 'address already
assigned' or similar. I need to give 2 LUs to every device.
I've also tried creating a pool, and setting the address to the pool.
But this doesn't stop any other device being allocated the LUs in the pool.
How do people work around this? I absolutly must have specific LUs at
specific addresses as the printers configs, applications access etc is
all LU specific.
Thanks! |

Quick followup, I have also tried setting different LUs to listen on a
different tcp port. This does work, but it's not exactly practical - it
will require different client configuration at each device and I'll have
to cater for all those port numbers on the firewalls and routers for
traffic priorities - with a few hundred sites I don't relish the idea of
going this route!!!! |

I don't understand why this would be any different then assigning specific
sessions to a workstation ID. We assign two session to each workstation ID
that can be an IP address or netbios name. You should be able to define these
as workstations with IP address and then assign multiple sessions to each
workstation.
When you define the TN3270 (LUA) sessions you should be able to statically
assign these. It is tedious if you do it manually. The other alternative is
using the SNACFG to import this from a text file.

Thanks - that is progress for me however it doesn't stop another machine
taking it's LU.
So for example, I created a 'workstation' by IP address. I connect to
the server and indeed get the LU I expected. But from another PC I was
still able to request a session and get given one that was 'assigned' to
my workstation. So this doesn't protect the LU as such.
What I'm really trying to do is explicitly allow or disallow an LU to an
IP address.
Thanks for the help so far! |

I am by no means an expert on this, but when I setup my TN3270 devices, I
can right click on a specific LU, select Properties, and on the IP Address
List input a specific IP address and Subnet Mask that I want to use this LU.
Then, if on the TN3270 tab of the LU Properties, the type is set as Generic
Display, your end user devices don't need to be specifically configured to
use a specific LU name. I don't ever use the "Workstations" configuration
folder for configuring TN3270 accesss. Hope that helps.

Thanks John, |
The thing is, when I try and do just what you describe I get an error
once I try and add the same ip address (host or network) to another LU.
So using that method I am limited to one LU per IP address - which is no
use at all to me.
I'm wondering if it's a bug that I can patch. But this Workstation
system seems to partially work for me - except that it doesn't stop
somone else picking up the LU. |

"279335" "q279335" and other combinations all bring no results on MS |
search (technet and general).
Was that the right number?
(As an aside, the search never seems to find what are seemingly
perfectly good queries. I once had the opportunity to raise this and
was told that it is for MCSEs and the fact that I wasn't trained is why
I can't use their search engine properly! I loved that!! I'm just lucky
that I have been born with the ability to use Oracle, Sun, Novell and
every other tehcnical site with ease. God forbit that MS would every
just recognise that they have less than stellar search technology.) |

different tcp port. This does work, but it's not exactly practical - it
will require different client configuration at each device and I'll have
to cater for all those port numbers on the firewalls and routers for
traffic priorities - with a few hundred sites I don't relish the idea of
going this route!!!!
Thanks John,
The thing is, when I try and do just what you describe I get an error
once I try and add the same ip address (host or network) to another LU.

Re: Configuring TN3270 to give certain LU to certain IP addr |

Is the session also assigned to a user. If so then the that user can get the
session.
On all our workstation definitions we make sure to check the (workstation
only) option. This prevents a user from logging on to that machine and
getting another LU that might be assigned to their user id.
