Combining multiple SNA 4.0 domains and Upgrading to HIS |
|
|
Has anyone had experience consolidating multiple SNA 4.0
domains and upgrading to HIS?
I have completed consolidating 11 SNA 4.0 domains into one
HIS 2000 domain and am looking for input for others who
have tried to do this and what problems you had doing it.
Our configuration looks good but it was a challenge. |

Only with 2-3 domains - not the 26 I recall you had to do!
I did it the same way you did - using snacfg.exe to "move" the configs into
the HIS 2000 config file.
For the migration period I used the
"HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\SnaBase\Parameters\OtherServers" reg
key to let the users transparently get at resources on the "old" SNA Servers
(listed by name in the reg key), whilst actually being pointed at the new
servers/subdomain.

I am interested in this registry key. Are you saying that
you were able to point the clients to the new domain but
by adding this entry to the registry it overrides the SNA
Base configuration?
I have been planning on migrating one domain at a time. We
just migrated the first site this weekend. We tried using
SMS to push the update.

Check out Kb article 128244
What I did was create empty pools for the legacy domain sna resources in the
new domain (this is required).
Then the clients can point at the new domain, and, if the otherservers reg key
is there listing the old servers, then clients can connect to resources in the
new domain AND the old domain(s) at the same time.
It worked well for me and made the migration a complete doddle.

RE: Combining multiple SNA 4.0 domains and Upgrading to HIS |

I found one issue that is now resolved. I exported the sna configs for each
SNA 4.0 domain to a text file using the snacfg command line utility. I then
combined the exported config text files. I rename the servers in the text
file appropriately to reflect my new HIS server names. I next imported the
new text file into the HIS servers. When I did this everything looked okay
but when I started trying to make changes to a PU or any changes associated
with LU(s) (ie: assigning sessions) I would get an out of date status on the
SNA Service that owned the PU and would get events 5166 and 5167 on the HIS
servers which is a manage error. I found that if I manually activate these
pu(s) on the new link service that subsequent changes to do cause these
errors.

LS,
Thanks!

Well, I know how few copies of my book on SQL Server sold and the SNA/HIS market is
much smaller! ;-)
I know some of the product pretty well - but there's whole chunks of it I've never
touched (like comti, sso)
Being an ex-IBM Mainframe systems programmer certainly helps as I know the
CICS/VTAM side of things as well - though I'm a tad rusty after being a
client-server/network bod since 1992.
