Anyone know if there are special licensing issues if my client wants to use
sharepoint team services for his web site?

Thank you,

The only thing that STS needs *itself* is the copy of Front Page 2002 that
contains it (or Office XP with FP 2002) to be allocated to the server
running it.

You also need the standard licensing requirements for the OS and database
system.

The problems come if you are not using the default MSDE 1.0 but are using
SQL Server 7/2K because then using a SQL Server 7/2K-based site on the
Internet probably leads to the requirement for some kind of special license
for Inet access in addition to the standard SQL Server licensing terms..

As always the only people who can give you a 100% guaranteed reply on
licensing requirements are Microsoft licensing experts so contact them via
your local MS office.

[Similar licensing requirements apply to the newer WSS product except that
WSS *itself* is free. But the difference is marginal.]

Thanks. As an addendum...

Q. What if my client has customers that want to use the site, and my client
wants to create sub-webs for each client/project. I see that there is a new
"External Connector License". Would this resolve any issues?

Thanks

I thought that the External Connector license applied only to the newer
program (Windows SharePoint Services -
microsoft.public.sharepoint.windowsservices) and not the older SharePoint
Team Services but I may be wrong.

If it applies, it was the sort of additional thing I was talking about.

Again Microsoft people (well at least licensing experts) should have more
exact info.

[and as an idea if your client is thinking of going into this further you
should really consider the new product rather than the old one - the costs
are virtually the same and the application better and the support better as
its a current product.]

I agree, the newer product makes more sense. Thanks for your feedback.

Licensing is probably one of the more confusing aspects of this business.
