SharePoint 2003 on Windows 2003 Web Edition |
|
|
Hi,
We've had numerous problems with installing "SharePoint 2003" on a
"Windows 2003 Web Edition" machine. The "SharePoint Portal Server"
Administration page (http://XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:17012/sps/Default.aspx or
"Start->All Programs->SharePoint Portal Server->SharePoint Central
Administration") has the following error: "Windows Portal Services,
Error, An attempt was made to perform an unauthorized registry
operation.". This means we cannot access and configure the Portal
Server, which appears to be off-line anyway. This error does not
generate entries in any of the machine's event logs. Nevertheless, we
can click through to the "Windows SharePoint Services" page, that
appears to work fine.
Another problem we have had occurs right after a user logs in. The user
gets the error that the "page cannot be found" but if he or she
refreshes the page in the browser, the page is loaded without any
further problems. We suspect this has to do with the machine's
connection to the SQL server, but we have no way of knowing or fixing
this problem.
--------------------------
History (Skip if you think it's irrelevant):
I've found that SharePoint 2003 will not install the SQL Database
Engine on the Web Edition, and the only SQL server available has to be
contacted through SQL authentication, because the windows server lies
outside our firewall. Creating a configuration database was therefore
rather cumbersome. I'm mentioning this "Web Edition" deviation because
it's the only difference I'm aware of between this installation and
others I've made on Enterprise Editions which were successful. What is
wrong? Why can't I access the portal admin? I've compared the
Enterprise Edition registry with this one and everything seems to be
where it should be.
--------------------------
Any help will be appreciated.
Kind regards,
Michalis Sarigiannidis

This is the newsgroup for SharePoint Team Services so the right newsgroup
for this question is the WSS newsgroup to which you've also posted the
question.
Please post only there in future.
Thanks.
