Howdy!

I know SharePoint can be used as a message board, alert notifier, etc. What
I am asking is, as a document repository, what are the differences between
using SharePoint and using a share drive?

Howdy Doody...

I use STS at my company primarily for a document repository for the
following reasons:

1) I can more easily categorize the numerous documents to facilitate
browsing.
2) I can provide more descriptive titles of documents in STS than I can with
network shares.
3) Users can subscribe to receive notifications when documents are modified
or added to specified document libraries.

The one thing that STS doesn't provide is a true version control, at least
without Visual SourceSafe. Also, if you are just now looking into Sharepoint
for your organization, you will probably want Windows Sharepoint Services
(WSS), which has additional features beyond what STS offers. STS is a
"legacy" application and has been superceded by WSS.

You may want to check out the WSS newsgroup at
microsoft.public.sharepoint.windowsservices - the folks there may provide
additional insight to your question.

I wonder actually whether he is not already using WSS and has posted to the
wrong group.

It's happened before :)

[Oh and while WSS does provide Versioning of documents, it's very limited
and not what users of for instance Visual SourceSafe would call true version
control.]
