Problem with fax server |
|
|
I have been trying to set up the fax server on a Windows 2003 domain
controller. Each time I try to go through the Fax Configuration Wizard I get
the following error:
A connection to the fax server cannot be made.
When I try to go into the Fax Service Manager, I get this message:
Could not open a connection to the fax service. The fax service might not
be started, or the computer name might be incorrect.
I really need help getting this set up. Thanks! |

Let's start with the Fax Service. If you look in Administrative Tools - Services, is the Fax service set to Automatic, Manual, or Disabled?

The fax service will not work on a domain controller

I'm pretty sure it will, unless you're saying something else that I'm not understanding. I have one server only, and it is a domain controller. The Fax service seems to work fine as a shared Fax printer.

Hi, and thank you for helping me try to fix this problem.
The service is set to Automatic
Log On As is set to This account with the DOMAIN\Administrator
I typed and confirmed the password. When I exit the properties and click
start, an error message comes back with the service started then stopped.

On my server, the Fax Service is set to manual with the Log On As set to This account - NT AUTHORITY\NetworkService.
Do you have Routing & Remote Access also enabled on the same server? Do you have the Print Server role enabled on the server? The latter is a necessity while the former can create conflicts.

That KB article actually offers a resolution to folks who "cannot run Fax service on a Windows 2003 based domain controller..."
Here is a screenshot of me doing exactly what this article says may be a problem for some.

The only trouble I have is that I caused some pain for senders when I got cute and removed the Everyone group entirely from the share security tab. I still don't know what Everyone is necessary when Users have even greater permissions and are in the Security and Permissions list.

Routing and Remote Access is installed, but disabled. And the server is set
up as a print server. I'm going through the steps in article 842207 and this
may sound stupid, but I can't find the Network Service account. Is this
something I need to create?

I'm going to have to look into that one. I did not have to create account and I don't recall having to specifically assign it to any service.
