I use to be able to do this. I assume some update is now preventing it.
When trying to Create a list from Excel File, the Visual Basic
Debugger opens with an error saying "Compile Error: User defined
type not defined". When I exit the debugger, I end up back at the "Create
New List" screen where I began, and then get a Microsoft Internet Explorer
dialog saying "!An unexpected error has occurred. (-2147215003)" OK.
I look this (-2147...) error up and found it indicated Microsoft Visual
Basic was not properly installed. Followed instructions to fix but didn't
solve the problem. I didn't expect it to since having VB installed isn't a
prerequsite to using STS anyway.
This problem exist on all sites hosted by two seperate file servers. I have
tried accessing the sites from both an XPHome and Windows2000 workstation.
I've tried importing different workbooks. I've read many suggestions on how
I
might change the Workbook settings but nothing I do makes the error go away.

Overview of my system: My servers and workstatoins are completely patched
upto date. Windows2000 Server, Office XP Professional, Frontpage2003:
I think this may have started after installing Frontpage2003 on my
workstations.
I have been using FP since 1997 and updated each year. The FP2003 is quirky
with STS on Windows2000server. Many FP2003 features can't be used with STS;
for instance I coculd publish a site to another server using FP2002 but can't
with FP2003. FP2003 has not been installed on either of the file serves.
Just the workstations I'm trying to access sites with have FjP2003. Hmmm.
think I'll go find a PC without Frontpage and try this there.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

The only suggestion I have is what you've already come to - which is to
remove FP 2003.

I haven't personally experienced any problems in accessing my STS sites with
a PC where FP 2003 (and the only functions that I have found that don't work
with STS are those that have been added to FP 2003 for WSS) is installed,
but I have only installed FP 2003 at the same time as Office 2003 so I don't
have your Office XP Pro / FP 2003 configuration.

I haven't heard of this kind of problem either but with so few people
posting here these days that have STS that's not really surprising.

Sorry to be of virtually no use.

FOUND A SOLUTION: First: I uninstalled Frontpage 2003 and installed
Frontpage 2002. This fixed the problem. I can import Excel workbooks to a
list.
Second: I reinstalled FP2003 selecting option to leave FP2002 (do not remove
existing software). At this point, my problem returned.
Third: I downloaded all patches for both programs. (Problem not fixed by
patches.)
Finally: The fix was comes from selecting repair from add/remove programs
and selecting the option to repair Frontpage 2002 (not reinstall). I now
have both versions of Frontpage one computer and can import Excel files to a
list.
It is also worth noting that FP2003 can not publish a web site to another
server but FP2002 can, list and all.

As for the value of your comments? They were helpful due to the fact that
if someone with your exposure to STS issues hadn't heard of the problem, then
I knew the problem was not a common one and so turned my attention to
examining my personal setup instead of looking for a Microsoft bug or issue.

Thanks.
