I have created a new subweb but instead of showing the default view with
"Announcements" and "Events", underneath the title it says "The list or view
of a list that is referenced here no longer exists". Also when I go to Edit
in FrontPage, where these two headings should be, it says "[The operation
failed because an unexpected error occurred. (Result Code: 0x80004005)]"

What can I do to correct this?

The error message is a standard (general) database message.

The usual reason for this message on the top page (default.htm) of a site or
subweb is that the database and the site are not in sync.

The first and easiest attempt to correct this is to (in the browser!!) amend
the home page by moving these lists out; Saving; then back; and Saving
again. This will give new "versions" and often clear up the discrepancy.

Otherwise run System Health (but when you do don't cross for the Security
checks).

All this is in the STS FAQ by the way.
