virtual server and top-level portal site |
|
|
Is it true that one needs to create multiple virtual
servers in order to have multiple portal sites configured
as http://site1.mydomain.com and http://site2.mydomain.com,
etc.? If there is some web part in one site intended to
share the same content with that in the other site, is
there any way to achieve it?
Please advise on the steps to make this happen. Thanks. |

SharePoint Portal Server doesn't store most information within its own data
store. Instead, it references and indexes information stored elsewhere (such
as in WSS).
As a result, you should have no problem configuring two different portal
sites to list items located in a single WSS site (or, for that matter, a
fileshare, or an external Web site, or ...).

Jim, thanks for the advice. We are not going to use
Sharepoint Portal Server, do you see there is a problem to
user the same content between two sites on two virtual
servers? Is there any reference that I can look at? I
appreciate for your help!

No, you just tell the second virtual server to use the same content database
as the first.
It gets a little more complicated if the virtual servers are on different
computers, and lots more complicated if you have a Venn-diagram situation
(some content only on server 1, some content only on server 2, some content
that appears to be on both.)
As to a reference, try:
Administrator's Guide for Windows Sharepoint Services
Configuring Two Virtual Servers to Host the Same Content

Do as all a favour and don't call it a portal site then, I was confused in
the early part of this thread :) Just call it a WSS site and we know where
we are without thinking.

Ok. I am confused too:-). Is it true that in Microsoft
teminoloty, the top-level site created in the WSS is not
called a portal? Headache!

Re: virtual server and top-level portal site |

Correct. When a virtual server is running WSS only, the top-level site at the
server root is not, in Microsoft termionology, a portal. It's simply the
top-level site at the server root. As such, it's no different (except for
URL) than any other top-level site on the same server.
The only thing that Microsoft calls a "portal" is an instance of Microsoft
Portal Server.
