Prestaging SUS or WUS |
|
|
Is there a way to setup a SUS (or WUS) server download all the updates and
then save them to a removable media?
The reason I ask is because I work for a training company and we are setting
up pratical exams where the students will need to implement SUS/WUS and we
would like to speed up the process and also avoid having to download all the
updates across our WAN each time a student takes this portion of the exam.
Thanks in advance!

For SUS, backup the SUS/Content/Cabs directory. Restore this directory
before doing the first sync. (If you wish to read about manual distribution
points, see page 22/23/24 of the SUS Deployment Whitepaper.

This is not what we need. What we are hoping for is not having to synch at
all. I am working with WUS and performed the following steps:
1. Setup 2K3 DC (London)
2. Enabled the Default Web Site
3. Installed BITS
4. Installed .NET Framework
5. Installed WUS
This all went fine. I did the synch (metadata only) and then saved the
WUSContent folder to my flash drive.
I then reimaged the computer and went through all the step above except :
a) Manually created the WUS folder and copied the WUSContent folder from my
flash drive to the c: drive.
When WUS launched, it displayed a status of having never been synched.
What do I need to do to get it to read the data from the synch I performed
earlier? Did I backup the wrong folder?
Help!
Thanks again!!!

I know that Windows Update Services (currently in beta/open eval) is
different that Software Update Services because the new product is using
SQL/MSDE under the hood. Since I don't have this installed anywhere and
working straight from memory, about the best I can do is direct you to the
documentation folder that installed with Windows Update Services. There
should be a deployment whitepaper in the documentation folder that might be
helpful in figuring out how to perform a backup/restore.
