How do you create single TASKS list from multiple subsites? |
|
|
I'm experimenting with WSS to see if it will help me manage my teams projects.
I've set up a main Site that lists our projects. If a project is big enough
it gets its own subsite.
Within each site Main site and Subsites I have TASK lists.
How can get a single TASK list from all the subsites?
Thanks for any help.

You will need to write a custom roll up web part or use the ones from
CorasWorks (www.corasworks.net).

I'm interested in that too, only that those from CorasWorks are quite
expensive, aren't there some that cost less?

There are none that I know of that offer the same functionality.
You can of course access lists from sub sites (or other sites on the same
server) using FP 2003's Data View but then you would have one web part per
List (so a number of web parts on the same single web page) rather than one
web part for all the lists as the original poster wanted.

Efferon,
what I've done is write a Web Service that builds and returns a DataSet
containing all Tasks. The Items also have a field called List and I sort and
group on that using a DataView WebPart.

The company I work for, UGS, writes software that sits on top of WSS. One
of the many things it adds to WSS is list rollup, which rolls the results of
many lists into one. Of course there are tons of other features like Item
Level Security and User Password change. The name of the product is
"Teamcenter Community." You can find some information about it here,
http://www.ugs.com/products/teamcenter/. There is a "Value Add to
Sharepoint" PDF here,
http://www.ugs.com/products/teamcenter/docs/wp_community_.pdf. It's about 3
MB
I'm not a salesman, so I have no idea on price and stuff like that.

I have a feeling that when I tried to check up on this I found that it was
not a separate, moderately priced product, but only available as part of a
(presumably very expensive as price was not listed) large package solution.
Can you confirm on deny that ?
Many people seem to think that the CorasWorks solution is too expensive but
at least a price *is* available for that on their web site.
I suspect that most people are looking for a simple fix to this one question
rather than for a product that "connects people and processes -- creating,
capturing, and sharing product knowledge to power innovation and
productivity, through an integrated portfolio of proven solutions built on
Teamcenter´s open PLM foundation." (quote from UGS web site) which sounds
suspiciously like overkill for people looking for "a single TASK list from
all the subsites".

As far as I know there is no ala carte ordering, it's all or nothing. I
have no idea what the pricing is like. If people are curious I can try to
get ballpark figures, but of course each deal as different things going on
that affect the price.
I would agree purchasing the entire project for this one feature probably
doesn't make sense, but many of the other features are asked about
frequently. Maybe someone can find enough value in all the features to make
it worth the cost. Maybe not, I have no idea.
If me posting information about our product is in bad taste, I will quit
immediately. No hard feelings.

I've no problems about you mentioning the fact that a product made by X
(when you work for X and say so) solves a problem. You have only done it
rarely and in those particular cases where it applies.
The problem is more with your company's web site. No doubt many other people
like me have seen your comment and gone to the web site expecting to see a
product listed for 'accumulation of doc libs info' and have found instead
pure marketing-speak.
Can I suggest that you arrange for a (new) page on your company web site
that includes information specific to this feature of your (big) product and
the info that the feature is only available as part of X and that X pricing
starts at $Y.
Then you could post the direct address to that page whenever an appropriate
question came up and everybody would have the quick info about it that they
need.
How does that sound?
