check in/out with office 97 |
|
|
Hi,
I have some clients with office 97 and they can not open word created in
office 2003. Also, for office 97 posted documents the drop down will not work
the same way it does for office 2003 documents. By clicking on the drop down
they will go to a page with horizontal menu for check in or out version
history and edit document. If they click on edit document they will get the
following error:
'Edit Document' requires q Window SharePoint Service-compatible application
and Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater.
They can check out the document, but can they open it for changes after they
checked out a document and check it in back.
Thanks,
Bob |

Functionality goes down with the version of Office.
There is a comparison paper from MS outlining what is the functionality in
respectively Office 2003; Office XP and Office 2000. Even that doesn't go
back as far as Office 97 (even my former employer an insurance company moved
off Office 98 a year ago).
Edit document isn't available with Office 97 I think it's safe to say and if
I remember correctly you need Office XP to be able to use it.
Adding IE 5.0 or greater will not help a bit.

I should add that for *reading* most Office 2003 documents there are free
Viewers available from Microsoft.
They would need to install these and make sure that the respective Office
2003 files were opened in them and then probably the Office 2003 files
stored in WSS would also open. (Read Only and they still wouldn't have
dropdown and Edit In functionality)

Mike,
I had IE 5.0 and upgraded to IE 6.0 and now I will get the drop down.
However, now when I check out a document I do not knwo how can I open it to
make the changes, since edit will not work. Is this mean all users need to
upgrade from office 97 in order to use the check in/out functionality.
Thanks,

The usual method if you don't have Edit In functionality is to download the
document to your hard disk; amend it there; save it there; and then upload
it back to the WSS site (by default overwriting the original).
I don't use this method so don't I'm afraid know if check out first before
doing this would be possible. Sorry. [I would imagine not, but you can test
this for yourself]
