I can successfully import user profiles from AD into sharepoint portal server
2003, and I have AD security groups mapped to SPS site groups, but I cannot
then log in to SPS as a member of the AD security group. The only way I can
get this to work is to manually add the user. How can I automate the user
import process so that members of AD security groups automatically have
access to SPS areas?

Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but navigate to
/_layouts/1033/webadmin.aspx and click on the manage anonymous access
settings. Set it to allow all authenticated users.

Alternatively, you can give the entire group access in SPS and all members
should get access.

Hope this helps.
