New Domain controller |
|
|
I'm the newtowrk admin for a smaller office 25 users. I am retiring the old
NT4.0 domain controller box and I've installed windows 2003 server on a new
dell server.
Since there are alot of old users who no longer work here in the NT 4.0 I'm
going to create the users from scratch on the new box, creating groups etc.
What I'm curious of is can I demote the NT 4.0 box to a member server to be
sure I get all the file data off of it? Or should I copy everything over
unplug it, and promote the windows 2003 server to DC . I'm assuming the
latter method would allow me to reuse the domain name. There are two other
member servers presently as well 1 windows 2000 server and one other windows
2003 member server. |

Hi
The role of a Windows NT 4.0 server is fixed at the time of installation.
You can't demote it to a member server. Well, actually, that's not quite
true. There's a third-party utility called UPromote
(http://www.purenetworking.net/Products/UPromote/UPromote.htm) that claims
to do this.
Copying the data over and promoting the 2003 server sounds like a good plan.
That way you don't do anything potentially destructive to the NT box until
you're happy with the way your Windows Server 2003 box is configured.
You could reuse the domain name, but bear in mind that you will need to
rejoin all workstations and member servers to the new domain. Just because
two domains both have the same name does not mean that they are the same
domain.
Hope this helps

Also, single label NT style domain names are not recommended in an Active
Directory environment. See:
