I'll try to keep this short.
I am replacing a 4.5 SBS with a 2003 SBS. Single server network.
The 4.5 box has 2 nic's. one going to the internal networ and the other to a
DSL router as does the new server.
My latest change was to bring up DHCP on the new server and disabling the
old. Interestingly, when I did an ipconfig on workstations, no DNS IP was
configured from DHCP on the old server nor was there any dns entry "hard
coded" in the workstation setup. I configured the new server for both dhcp
and dns (unplugging the external nic on the old server) , I think correctly.
I then set up a brand new XP workstation and an older W2K one to use the new
server for dhcp and, therefor, dns and it worked fine. I then tried to set
up 2 more XP but not new workstations. I cannot get internet access from
those 2 workstations even though their respective ipconfig info is exactly
the same. The strangest part is, changing nothing else, I plugged the
external connection back into the old server and I got internet access on all
4 workstations..

Another piece of data -- With just the new server "on-line", when I try to
go to a web site like yahoo.com, down at the bottom of IE, it shows the
correct ip address for that site so it seems like dns is working. Also, when
I ping yahoo.com, it does resolve but it takes about 30 seconds for the first
reponse to my ping.
I can't figure out what role the old server is still providing that the new
one is not, but only for some workstations.

I am confused.

Hi Dave,

Did you remove the Proxy client on the workstations and did you then install
the Firewall Client?

Marina,
Thanks for the clue. I am not familiar with the terms "proxy/firewall
clients". Are you referring to the setting in IE which tells it to look for
a proxy server ??
Thanks again.

Hi Dave,

Also, but if you had SBS 4.5, the ms proxyclient must have been installed on
the workstations. If you have migrated according to the ms doc, you should
have removed that client from the workstations first.
