I would suspect that it won't work.

Re: Domain rename |

any solutions then ? do I have to replace all users starting from the sps
application pool up until the site users ?
I mean, companies get acquired or merged more frequently these days, and
when it happen, most likely they will change the domain. I believe MS
invented the domain rename feature to address these needs. If the domain get
renamed successfully but then the applications under it won't work, then
what's the point ? :) just wondering

I'd go ahead and create the new domain, then setup a trust between the new
one and the old one. If the old one needs to go away, then you'll need to
replace all the security principles in SharePoint with new ones from the new
domain.
This is not a trivial thing. Part of planning a SharePoint implementation
is planning to have the domain you install it into around for years to come.
Just my $0.02.
