Is there a difference between SPS Backup and SQL db backup?

SPSBackup backs up all of the portal, team sites and document libraries but
if I backed up the SQL DB's wouldn't I be able to restore through SQL also?
Or would I be able to restore individual areas using SPSBackup?

Please read the disaster recovery chapter in the resource kit. I think this
chapter will more than answer your question.
