Sure it's a big problem!

The MOM database should not exceed 30Mo. You should not use automatic file
growth.

you can try to set the grooming value to 3 days and then launch the grooming
jobs from SQL Enterprise Manager

8 GB is not too big. MOM 2005 supports up to 30 GB. Please post the

error, or why you think you cannot upgrade. The size of the DB cannot be
the problem. But you might have to enlarge the tempdb and log file size.

there should not be a problem in upgrading to MOM 2005. The upgrade might
take a while but should work, make sure that your tempdb and log is big
enough to handle the upgrade process of the database.
