Are you looking for SMS functionality? That has a software inventory |
tool!

I don't know if this is what the parent is talking about, but I would
like to see something like this. Not an inventory like SMS but an
alert that Software Package X has just been installed. Is there
something like this in there now or would this have to be some sort of
custom script? Can this even be monitored by a custom script? I
wouldn't want to necessarily manage the software installation like SMS,
just know when it's been done. Be alerted to the fact that something
has been installed and maybe it shouldn't have been or give a clue as
to why functionality Y is acting up all of a sudden. |

No, NetIQ Application Manager can do, it checks the registry for MSI
packages that have been added or removed. If MOM cannot do it then I'm
tempted to write my own script. I'd love to save myself the effort however.

If AppManager can do it, MOM can do it.
MOM can monitor registry keys, and I bet that's what NetIQ AppManager is
doing. Just need some script kiddies to throw something together for us
lamers in the MOM community who refuse to script! ;o) (Trying to learn
this late in the game...really fun, but I'm total newbie to scripting!).

You DON'T have to write a script for doing this.
i even think there are existing rules for collection MSI events from windows
applog, but have not checked!
if not so just create a new managementpack with ressource kit tool to
collect all msi events from eventlog.
every time a app installs or uninstalls it's logged there!
