SQL Administration in SBS2003. |
|
|
I am completely new to SQL administration.
I have a client who is migrating their accounting package to a SQL Server
based version. They currently have SBS 2003 Premium running and SQL is being
used for Sharepoint & Veritas Backup.
According to documentation, there should be a plug-in in IIS that allows you
to manage SQL, but there isn't one listed. Is there something else I need to
install via the CDs? I know there are some web based utilities that look
awesome to use, but my client would rather not spend the $350+ for software
they will only ocassionally use.
Thank you.

You can use the Enterprise manager from the SQL tools?

There is nothing in the Programs folder that has any reference to SQL tools.
Nothing in the Server Administration box either. This is why I am so
confused. Is there an option in server installation to install SQL tools? I
knew my client would be using SQL and wouldn't have opted to not install SQL
tools, but maybe I did.

Run the SQL Server CD on the Workstation where the SQL Server will be
administered from and it will give you the option to install the Admin
Tools. - They do not install by default on the Server as Part of the SQL
Server install.
There is also a Web Admin for SQL Server:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c039a798-c57a-419e-acbc-2a332cb7f959&displaylang=en
Also be aware that your Sharepoint & Veritas Backup are probably running
MSDE unless you have specifically upgraded these databases to SQL
Server.
Do not forget to Backup the SQL Server and MSDE Databases and to keep
them Service Packed.

SQL nor ISA install automatically when SBS2003 is installed. You have to
insert the 5th CD and install each manually.
