installing MS CS 2002 on Windows XP (SP2) |
|
|
Hi all,
I am attempting to install MS Commerce Server 2002 Developer edition on my
development machine. This is a windows XP machine with SP2 and all current
fixes installed. It is a member of a domain and has a local SQL 2000
installation (including Analysis services and SP 3a).
When I attempt to install Commerce Server the setup routine does not display
the installation type, and the only components offered for installation are
'Administration Tools' and 'Online Documentation'.
I have found nothing in the install documentation or the MS KB that offers
any help on for this issue. Has anyone else experienced this problem or
have any ideas what is causing it ?
Thanks in advance,
Robin Boyd |

Try stopping the Themes service and try again... see if it gets better.
I don't recommend people try to develop on a Windows XP platform. There are
too many little things that are different enough to cause issues. A Virtual
PC instance of Windows 2000/2003 server for doing CS development might make
more sense.

Hi Robert,
turning the Themes service off made no difference. The suggested solution
of installing a Virtual Machine seems like using a sledgehammer to open a
walnut!
I guess there the best solution is to ditch XP, do the same issues exist for
other development areas e.g. BizTalk Server, Share Point Portal Server?
Thanks anyway,
Robin

You are running SP3 for Commerce Server, are you?
(before the SP, you had to tweak the MSI to install on "professional" OS'es)

I believe that in the Commerce SP3 directory (after extracting) there is a
new SetupDevEdition.exe or something like that, that will install everything
correctly

Robin,
The process for installing CS2002 on Windows XP is a little counter
intuitive, primarily because CS2002 SP2 is required *before* CS2002 can be
installed. Bottom line is that you don't install CS2002 on Windows XP by
running the CS2002 setup.exe file. Instead you have to run a special .exe
that comes as part of CS2002 SP2. That .exe will install CS2002 and then you
have to apply SP2 on top of it. The following comes from CS2002 SP2 Read Me
file. The Read Me file is probably where you need to start.

I guess it's all a matter of opinion and personal experience. I've done my
CS2002 development on both Windows 2000 (pre SP2) and Windows XP (post SP2)
and haven't had any issues either way. I make sure I do my system testing on
a server that's representative of the final target operations system,
usually Windows Server 2003 these days, but haven't found it necessary to
make that my development platform as well.
