Is there a MS or third party product that handles just the "Profiling System"
of Commerce Server (viz. user, role and group management)? it's for a custom
asp.net application.

ASP.NET 2.0 will have a profile system in it ... if you can wait.

If you're OK with using AD to store profiles then the AZMAN (Authorization
Manager) with Win2K3 could help provide roles and authentication access
control.
