Turn on tracing and take a look at the tracing log.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Tracing\RTCDLL
EnableFileTracing (Change from 0 to 1)
The log will be located at: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Tracing |

I hate to ask this, but can you post a little about your architecture? Is
this over a LAN or a WAN? Are you running LCS 2003 or LCS 2005 (not as
important as the WAN question)? Is the LAN stable? What hardware is the
LCS server installed on? Does it share softare space with any other
applicaitons? What version of Windows Messenger (again, not as important as
the WAN question) are you using? Have you noticed any other problems with
the network?
I have seen things as small as a flapping port on the WAN cause issues
similar to this. I have also seen network cabling issues cause problems
with servers, particularly Exchange, LCS, and file/print (Linux, Novell, and
Windows).
Anyway, your answers to those questions should help a little bit as well as
the tracing information.

You must EXIT the messenger client, not just sign-out for the logging to
begin taking place.
