Hi,

I have just recently upgraded my 2 windows 2000 domain controllers to
windows 2003 (x.x.co.uk and y.x.co.uk), I have also upgraded my
exchange server to 2003 from 2000, it's installed on x.x.co.uk.
x.x.co.uk is my schema master.

I want to install LCS 2003 on y.x.co.uk but when I try to do so I get
the error..

"Error 27690. Error '0x80070005' checking for registry key for schema
master 'x.x.co.uk' during 'UploadSchemaEx'"

Now to test wether it was the dc I tried to install it on the schema
master but that came back with the same error.

I have done the following

checked dc using dcdiag = no errors
no events errors other than that created by the error above
moved AD user accounts from other OU's into the default OU
ran rtcsrv.msi prep=schema
I am installing with enterprise admin account
"rpc locator" and "remote registry" services are running
anyone have any ideas ??

cheers
Dave

Dave,

Your account must have:
Schema Administrator
Enterprise Administrator
and the remote registry service needs to be running (likely problem)

Also I cannot select "use an existing account" for the service, it
grey's out the options and only gives me "create an account" the
account name is "rtcservice"

does this have anything to do with it ?

Dave,

That is interesting. So when running setup you can't select the account but
only create it. Can you provide the setup log for this? You will likely
want to create an account (possibly delete current one and recreate) and
then when finished send the log file.

Dave,

I missed the first posting, I was watching the existing thread, let's
continue with this one.
The first part of that error will occur for everyone and we can ignore it.

Unfortunately there is no public info on this, but there are two current
solutions documented for other customers I will push through the system
now.

1) The Remote Registry service not running on the schema master
2) Check registry permissions on schema master role holder at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurePipeServer\winreg.

Shema master role holder did not have rights for administrators and local
service wasn't present. after adding permissions so administrators have
full control and local service account has read permissions we were able to
update the schema with rtcsrv.msi prep=schema.

hi Tom,

Sorry, I don't quite understand what your asking me to do.

I have checked the Remote Registry Service on both DC's and it is
runing
I also had a look at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurePipeServer\winreg

and found only one key...
Name = Description
Type = REG_SZ
Data = Registry Server

I also found at that location 2 other folders AllowExactPaths and
AllowedPaths

Hi Tom,

I have done something this morning that I should have done before, and
that is to remotely connect to the registry on the Schema master to
verify it does indeed have the remote registry service running. Here's
what I found

When I open regedit on a windows xp machine, and then select "File /
Connect Network Registry" I then select "x.x.co.uk" x.x.co.uk then
appears in my registry editor with 2 Keys "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" and
"HKEY_USERS". When I try to expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE it gives me an
error of "Cannot open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE: error while opening key."

If I open y.x.co.uk in registry editor and select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE it
comes up with no error.

Is this an issue? I have never used the remote registry so I don't know
if this is ok? I will try to re-install the remote registry service
(I'm not sure if I can even do that)

I have not been able to remove the "Remote Registry Service" I have
also downloaded the eval version of 2005 which also failes to update
the schema, with an error of "access denied" although it does say I am
a schema admin

Since it's probably the remote registry service I am putting a post in
microsoft.public.win2000.general asking how do I remove and re-install
the registry service.

SUCCESS !!!!!

the "LOCAL SERVICE" account didn't have any permissions on the "WINREG"
key, after adding it and giving it full control the instalation worked
no probs.

I know you said that earlier but it made no sense to me, maybe I had a
little too much too drink over the christmas period :)
thankyou for your help Tom.
