I just read this post and it was VERY helpful.
I just wanted to point out that the actual steps to resolve this were not mentioned anywhere in this topic. That is what I wanted to post since it was a bit confusing to me since I had never dealt with registry permissions before, and since others may be new to this concept as well..
First, from the registry editor, right-click on the winreg key in the treeview. Click on Permissions.., then give full control to Administrators and to LOCAL SERVICE ..if LOCAL SERVICE is not in there, then add it and give it full control.
Then, ...try the Schema Prep again!
