Diferance between MSN messenger and Windows Messenger |
|
|
Hi All,
I installed LCS 2005 to evaluate the product.
When I tried to connect from MSN messenger (6.2) to my server, I didn't find
the "accounts" tab (under Tools --> options)
I installed Windows messenger (5.1) and found the "accounts" tab and
connected to my server successfully.
What is the difference between MSN messenger and Windows messenger?
Is it possible to connect from MSN messenger to my local LCS 2005?
Thanks In Advanced!

Personally (and some people will *fwap* me for this)...I think of MSN as
Windows Messenger Lite Home Edition.
MSN Messenger will not connect to LCS. I, too, miss the emoticons from
smileycentral *smirk* when using WM. Granted, my professional co-workers
might not appreciate the bowling ball smiley. And, obviously, it is my
choice whether or not to use it =^).
These are some of my observations on Messenger product differences:
MSN messenger is designed to connect to the MSN messaging service. Windows
Messenger is a triple-stack client, supporting MSN, SIP (LCS is a SIP
server), and Exchange 2000 IM (RVP).
Windows Messenger (4.7) is standard with XP and MSN messenger has to be
downloaded and installed. If I remember correctly 4.7 only supported MSN
and Exchange 2000 IM. Note: Windows Messenger 5.0 and 5.1 also have to be
downloaded and installed.
Both MSN and Windows Messenger allow for single-connection peer-to-peer
audio. Radvision makes a plug-in for Windows Messenger to allow mulit-party
conferencing rather than allowing single-party. They do not make this same
plug-in for MSN Messenger.
MSN Messenger relies on Netmeeting for video and audio in XP. Windows
Messenger incorporates this functionality into the client on XP systems.
There are obviously more differences between the two. Johnathan Kay is one
of the MVPs for Messenger (XP and MSN) and documents many of the differences
quite nicely:

Another simple way to differentiate between MSN messenger and WM is looking
at the anology for email.
MSN messenger --> hotmail
Used by consumers who really dont care where their email/Instant message is
stored/routed.
WM/LCS --> Exchange
Used for enterprises who care about keeping corporate emails/Instant
messages with in the enterprise firewall.
Enterprises need LCS for the same reason why they opt for Exchange.
Enterprises do not use hotmail for corporate communication.
thanks,
